Hello!

Thank you for taking time out of your busy day to visit my site.

Fun Fact ... Did you know I used to be an art teacher? I also used to write a blog for parents, teachers, and caregivers of young children called Pink and Green Mama. I spend my time here now, making art in my studio and sharing my work with the world, but I would like to invite you to look at my Art Lesson Ebooks in my shop if you have young children in your life and want to share art and creative experiences with them. They are packed with all kinds of hands-on ways you can CREATE, PLAY, and EXPLORE with them!

TEDxBend 2017

May 14, 2017

I was honored to be asked to participate in the art show for TEDxBend again this year. This year we were each given a wooden post to create a piece of art with for the stage. A totem if you will for this year's theme of "US Humans" I created a milepost marker with a map on it - a part of my Map Series. Below is the statement from the show.

Local contemporary artist, MaryLea Harris, specializes in mixed media and painting.

Her abstract work features brightly colored backgrounds created by layering paint and

scraping it away with plastic gift cards. These cards are wonderful tools not only for

scraping paint but also serve as a reminder of our consumer-driven society and how

quickly we replace nature with man-made materials. Her latest Map Series is meant to

explore our relationships between physical place, connection, belonging, and our

collective personal journeys. Authenticity > Perfection. The layers in her work

analogize the interplay between positives and negatives in space and life. She focuses

on the interplay of space as she reflects on her own positive and negative growth

experiences in the past few years.

“There is a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in” – Leonard Cohen

“This Place Called Home” explores what the concept of home means to you.

Is it the structure in which you sleep? Where you grew up? This Town? Our planet?

We are all connected as global citizens with shared experiences.

The maps of our lives are one of the many ways we are joined together as humans.

This post serves as a mile marker. A pause on your map.

A reminder to reflect on your journey, where you’ve been and where you are headed next.

HeART of the Matter - February 2017 First Friday Art Walk

February 4, 2017

First Friday was another chilly whirlwind this month with a great political first friday art show at Franklin Crossing curated and hosted by Billye Turner. Local artists expressed our heartfelt concerns about the United States and it was a very powerful evening. I also got a chance to make it over the see my friend Valerie Winterholler's new show at the Peterson Roth Gallery downtown.

New Year, New Art.

January 8, 2017

Very excited to be showing my work with JM Brodrick and Kelly Thiel at Franklin Crossing for the January First Friday Art Walk hosted by Billye Turner. It was icy, snowy and chilly but we had a great turnout and really apprecaited everyone who braved the cold weather and stopped by to support our show. I even sold two of my paintings "A Beautiful Mess" went to a collector here in Bend and my painting "The Color of Joy" went to a collector in Georgia.

Speak Your Truth. Always.

November 25, 2016

This is part of my Map Series. I titled this painting, "Speak Your Truth. Always." My abstract maps are meant to explore our relationships between physical place, connection, belonging, and our collective personal journeys. I'm exploring color, texture, and line. I'm focusing on the interplay of "positive" and "negative" space as I reflect on my own positive and negative growth experiences from the past few years. The cracks are how the light gets in. I'm using these maps as a form of art therapy to explore living more simply while celebrating nature, color, texture, and line. This particular map was painted in the days leading up to the election while I was filled with optimism and excitement for my daughters and the generations of women that came before me, to see our first woman President elected. I finished this map on election night, heartbroken, angry and numb. I turned off the television as the election results started coming in; filling a televised map with red. I escaped to my studio to paint and sort through my feelings. I cried. My tears are in this painting.

Please do not numb out. Now is the time to speak up for those who do not have a voice. Speaking the truth, and speaking up for others can be scary but silence is more frightening. We must speak our truth and defy the ignorant voice in the White House. He is not my President. He does not stand for what I believe in. I believe in human rights. I believe in climate science. I am a citizen of the planet. I believe the World needs more LOVE, LIGHT and TRUTH right now. Do not accept alternative facts. Do not give in.

Resist and speak your Truth.

“Many people, especially ignorant people, want to punish you for speaking the truth, for being correct, for being you. Never apologize for being correct, or for being years ahead of your time. If you’re right and you know it, speak your mind. Speak your mind even if you are a minority of one. The truth is still the truth.” – Mohatma Gandhi

November First Friday Show at Sotheby's Realty Downtown Bend

November 5, 2016

Super excited to be showing my work at Cascade Sotheby's Realty this month. I had a great opening reception and met a lot of really nice people and only one heckling troll woman who heckled me and my art. She was just a sad, broken, angry human. Oh well... Minus her, the whole thing was super fun and we went out for a great dinner after my reception with two old friends at our favorite, The Blacksmith (get the Manhattan Flight and the Brussel Sprouts and Fried Polenta appetizers!) That was the icing on the cake!

Our friend Caleb, sampling the wine!

St Charles Bend Group Show with the High Desert Art League

October 1, 2016

My fellow High Desert Art League members and myself were honored to show our work in a group show this fall/winter at the St. Charles Hospital Bend location. We hope that our work brought some comfort and light to the patients and staff there. Our show was located in the hallways around the cafeteria and got lots of traffic.

Layers & Edges at Natural Edge Furniture in Bend

July 25, 2016

I'm so excited about my upcoming show at Natural Edge Furniture in Bend.

“Layers & Edges” Art show will have it's opening reception this Friday, July 29th from 5-7 pm at Natural Edge Furniture (135 NE Norton Ave in the Maker’s District in Bend.)
Drinks, Food, Music, and all new art by MaryLea Harris will be on display.
Plus gorgeous furniture made here in Bend! Win. win.

The show will be up through late September.

The reception on Friday will have a free hands on craft (maker station) for the kids. Because I have a background in arts education, I enjoy providing hands on art opportunities for kids at my art shows. Sharing art experiences with our children is such a great way to make memories. The lack of arts programs in our public schools makes exposing kids to local artists, art shows, and cultural events even more important. I was an elementary art teacher before I decided to focus on my art career, I have a passion for sharing the arts with kids and developing their taste for art museums and cultural institutions.

A sneak peek at my Natural Edge Furniture Show in Bend...now thru September in the Maker's District.

Hard at work installing my work at Natural Edge earlier this month!

Artist's Statement from my latest solo show:

Local contemporary artist, MaryLea Harris, specializes in mixed media and painting. Her whimsical and colorful images of leaves and trees are outlined in creams and whites to analogize the interplay between positives and negatives in space and life. Her abstract work features brightly colored backgrounds created by layering paint and scraping it away with disposable plastic gift cards. While useful tools, the plastic cards also symbolize our consumer-driven society polluted with man-made waste. From this ironic use of waste comes her light-filled and whimsical imagery, emphasizing the beauty of “nature in its still state. Her latest Map Series is meant to explore our relationship between physical place, connection, belonging, and our collective personal journeys.

New Painting for COBA Tour of Homes '16 "Inward Journey" by MaryLea Harris

July 11, 2016

I've been a busy bee working away in my studio for the past two weeks getting this big painting finished for this year's COBA Tour of Homes '16. This giant painting is my third painting in my brand new "Map Series." (I will share more on that soon!) It is entitled "Inward Journey" 2016. It measures 48" x 60" and is filled with creamy neutral tones and soft metallic golds and copper. Below you will see a sneak peek of some details, the painting in my studio in progress and a fun selfie. I'll share more photos once the painting is installed at the tour home in Shevlin for Simplicity Homes (Tour home #1 on this year's tour - hooray!)

High Desert Art League Group Exhibition, "Art In A Series" All Summer at Sunriver Lodge and Resort

July 8, 2016

I am honored to have three of my paintings on display all summer at the Sunriver Lodge as part of a group exhibition "Art In A Series" with my fellow artists in the High Desert Art League (HDAL for short.) For this show I am displaying three acrylic paintings of abstracted nature. I create bright backgrounds by layering colorful acrylics then, to create texture and depth, scrape the painted surface with unwanted, disposable plastic gift cards. While useful tools, the plastic cards also symbolize our consumer-driven society polluted with man-made waste. From this ironic use of waste comes my light-filled and whimsical imagery, emphasizing the beauty of “nature in its still state.”  I frequently outline my whimsical and colorful images of leaves and trees in creams and whites to analogize the interplay between positives and negatives in space and life. Our show will run May 27, 2016 - September 2016 in the Sunriver Lodge at the Betty Gray Gallery located at 17600 Center Drive in Sunriver, Oregon.

"Fall In Technicolor" 2015 MaryLea Harris, available for sale on display all summer at Sunriver Resort in the Main Lodge. 24 " x 30"

"Beautiful Mess" 2015, MaryLea Harris 16" x 16" available for sale and on display at Sunriver Resort, Oregon. Summer 2016.

TEDxBend 2016 "Reverie" Group Exhibition

April 25, 2016

I had the honor of showing some new paintings at the TEDxBend after party bash this year with some other local artists: Christian Brown, Michelle Lindblom, Paige Barnes, and Lisa Marie Sipe. Our theme was "Reverie" and we all shared work that was our interpretation of the theme. Our show was up from April 22-24, 2016. Just a quick weekend pop-up show in the Old Mill district in the old Orvis building.

"New Nature" City Walls at City Hall Group Exhibit

February 1, 2015

I'm so excited to be participating in a group show at City Hall in downtown Bend with my Women's Artist Group of Bend. The show is called "New Nature" and will be on display February 2015 - May 2015. It is part of the City Walls at City Hall initiative. This is a great show with a variety of work from a group of really great local, women artists here in Bend. All of the pieces are connected by their common theme of "Nature" Stop by and visit if you're in town! I sold one of my pieces, "Happy Little Leaves #7" to a collector here in town. It will be on display until the show comes down, then it will be off to it's new home. My other piece, a large diptych called "Put a Bird on It" is still available for sale. Contact me if you're interested in learning more about it.

TREESCAPES Solo Exhibit at LUMIN Studio in Tumalo, October 2014

January 22, 2015

I was so honored to have the opportunity to share my work with the Central Oregon community with my debut show at LUMIN Studios on Tumalo this past October. It was a family affair with help from my dear husband, parents, and in-laws with things like child care and help with meals as I painted 30 paintings in 30 days in the month of September and prepared my work to show at the gallery. I had a successful opening afternoon and sold 6 paintings. It was overwhelming to be surrounded by friends, neighbors, fellow parents from school, local artists, and even a friend from college at my show's opening reception. I'm so grateful to the wonderfully talented, Carolyn Stokes, of Photography In Bend for capturing the light in the gallery and showcasing my work and the reception. I'll even forgive you for the photos that include my double chin!
