The show will be up through late September.

The reception on Friday will have a free hands on craft (maker station) for the kids. Because I have a background in arts education, I enjoy providing hands on art opportunities for kids at my art shows. Sharing art experiences with our children is such a great way to make memories. The lack of arts programs in our public schools makes exposing kids to local artists, art shows, and cultural events even more important. I was an elementary art teacher before I decided to focus on my art career, I have a passion for sharing the arts with kids and developing their taste for art museums and cultural institutions.

Artist's Statement from my latest solo show:

Local contemporary artist, MaryLea Harris, specializes in mixed media and painting. Her whimsical and colorful images of leaves and trees are outlined in creams and whites to analogize the interplay between positives and negatives in space and life. Her abstract work features brightly colored backgrounds created by layering paint and scraping it away with disposable plastic gift cards. While useful tools, the plastic cards also symbolize our consumer-driven society polluted with man-made waste. From this ironic use of waste comes her light-filled and whimsical imagery, emphasizing the beauty of “nature in its still state. Her latest Map Series is meant to explore our relationship between physical place, connection, belonging, and our collective personal journeys.

COBA Tour of Homes '16 Simplicity Model in Shevlin

The Tour of Homes was a huge success with tons of foot traffic both tour weekends. The Simplicity Model in Shevlin Estates that I displayed my painting in won 7 out of 8 awards in it's category. You can view photos of the home here.

The feedback about my painting, "The Journey Home" has been very positive and I'm honored to have been asked to participate again this year.

This is the largest painting in my new Map Series so far. With the map series I'm exploring our relationships with physical place, connection, belonging, and our collective personal journeys. You can find more of my map series and watch it evolve on Instagram with the hashtag #mapseries16.

New Painting for COBA Tour of Homes '16 "Inward Journey" by MaryLea Harris

I've been a busy bee working away in my studio for the past two weeks getting this big painting finished for this year's COBA Tour of Homes '16. This giant painting is my third painting in my brand new "Map Series." (I will share more on that soon!) It is entitled "Inward Journey" 2016. It measures 48" x 60" and is filled with creamy neutral tones and soft metallic golds and copper. Below you will see a sneak peek of some details, the painting in my studio in progress and a fun selfie. I'll share more photos once the painting is installed at the tour home in Shevlin for Simplicity Homes (Tour home #1 on this year's tour - hooray!)

High Desert Art League Group Exhibition, "Art In A Series" All Summer at Sunriver Lodge and Resort

I am honored to have three of my paintings on display all summer at the Sunriver Lodge as part of a group exhibition "Art In A Series" with my fellow artists in the High Desert Art League (HDAL for short.) For this show I am displaying three acrylic paintings of abstracted nature. I create bright backgrounds by layering colorful acrylics then, to create texture and depth, scrape the painted surface with unwanted, disposable plastic gift cards. While useful tools, the plastic cards also symbolize our consumer-driven society polluted with man-made waste. From this ironic use of waste comes my light-filled and whimsical imagery, emphasizing the beauty of “nature in its still state.”  I frequently outline my whimsical and colorful images of leaves and trees in creams and whites to analogize the interplay between positives and negatives in space and life. Our show will run May 27, 2016 - September 2016 in the Sunriver Lodge at the Betty Gray Gallery located at 17600 Center Drive in Sunriver, Oregon.

Fiona's Apple Tree - SOLD!

I'm so excited to announce that I SOLD my painting, "Fiona's Apple Tree" to a dear friend and neighbor here in Bend Oregon. She purchased it as a birthday gift for herself and I had the honor of delivering and installing the painting in her beautiful home on her birthday weekend. The new owner of the painting loves trees and we discussed the symbolism of this particular painting. It is a predecessor to my Map Series with stained glass-like elements hidden among the branches. The tree symbolizes growth, renewal, roots, family and rebirth. This painting was based on a photo of a tree I took by my grandmother's house in Colorado following a wild fire at the Royal Gorge in Canon City. It was standing blackened and alone in the mist, silhouetted against a stormy sky with new wildflowers starting to emerge at it's feet. Trees have always been powerful personal symbols for me and I felt a deep connection to nature while working on this piece. I also happened to be listening to Fiona Apple songs while painting it, hence the play on words in the title.

TEDxBend 2016 "Reverie" Group Exhibition

I had the honor of showing some new paintings at the TEDxBend after party bash this year with some other local artists: Christian Brown, Michelle Lindblom, Paige Barnes, and Lisa Marie Sipe. Our theme was "Reverie" and we all shared work that was our interpretation of the theme. Our show was up from April 22-24, 2016. MUSE Women's Conference 2016 - MUSE Art Show

I showed a mixed media, life size, self portrait piece entitled "Inner Awesome Tribe" at the MUSE Art Show during the 2016 MUSE Conference in Bend Oregon, March 4-6 at the Jenny Green Gallery in downtown Bend. The juried show featured the work of 24 female artists from across the Pacific Northwest.

This was a very personal and powerful piece for me to create. I opened myself up to vulnerability and truth telling with this piece and explored my own "Inner Awesome Tribe" of female MUSES who have made me the artist that I am today.

How Does Your Muse Inspire You? |

My tribe consists of powerful feminist women artists who have helped cultivate my creative life and who have encouraged my daring adventures in painting and motherhood. Each member has influenced my work in different ways and can be seen in everything I create. Georgia O’Keeffe, Frida Kahlo, and Louise Nevelson became my role models during art history classes at my all-women college. They inspired me to stand up for myself as a woman artist. My Grandma Clarice painted flowers, sewed, traveled fearlessly, and danced her way into her late 90’s. My Grandma Cleo is a gardener, lover of nature, and a staunch feminist; we got our driver’s licenses on the same day. My mother, Jill, paints flowers and nature scenes, volunteers selflessly, and taught me unconditional love. Alena Henessy inspired me to combine my mixed media and painting styles with layers of personal symbols in brave intuitive paintings. Lisa Soong, was my best mommy friend; she had a wicked sense of humor and was one of the kindest women I have ever met. She broke my heart when she died of cancer in 2012 at the age of 47. She taught me my mantra, “We Can Do Hard Things.” My own daughters, Emma and Claire make their own art. Every day they demonstrate limitless creativity and imagination; they inspire me to make art that is vulnerable and honest.

Love Wins Series 2016

I recently completed a series of mixed media heart paintings that I'm calling my "Love Wins" series. Each heart represents a word related to love because I believe that love is a verb. It requires action to move forward and really is one of my very favorite things on this planet. Inspired by the people I love most in this world, my husband and my kids. These whimsical mixed media pieces incorporate many layers of texture and color. I wanted to create a series of original paintings that are affordable because there is nothing like the gift of an original piece of art for your special someone. My heart is full of love, rainbows, and art and my wish is for yours to be filled with the same!

Last Saturday Featured Artist at The Workhouse In Bend

Getting my work into The Workhouse in Bend has been on my art bucket list since we found out we were moving here two years ago. I was such an honor to be the featured artist for Last Saturday on September 26th. We had a great time and a great turn out of over 100 people with live local music, locally made cocktails served in hand made, locally thrown cups while we all enjoyed some great local art. The Workhouse is located in the Old Iron Works next to Sparrow Bakery in Bend, it features the work of 50 local artists and has live studio spaces for 8 local artists. It's my favorite show venue and must go to shopping spot in town. Get ready for lots of pictures because that's what's coming. I didn't get my camera out all evening to take photos during the actual show because I was so busy talking to people but I took plenty while I was setting up. My show will be up thru the month of October.

Central Oregon Builder's Association Tour of Homes '15

I was so honored to be chosen as the featured artist for the showcase home by Simplicity Homes for this year's COBA '15 Tour of Homes. I created a custom 4' x 6' piece for the family room called "Anticipation", it is such a bold statement piece when you walk into the home and it's still available for purchase so contact me if you're interested! One of my stripes series paintings, "Pink Stripes #3" (36"x36" 2015) was on display in the bonus room/loft upstairs and one of my oldies, a mixed media piece called "The Path Is a Circle" (2006, NFS) was in the master bath.  I also made this cute little birdie series of paintings for the show that SOLD the first weekend and will be shipping to Virginia to live in their new nest. My "I Like. Big. Leaves" painting also debuted at the showcase home, it was later shown at the Lubbesmeyer Studio for Art in the High Desert weekend and The Workhouse in Bend for my Last Saturday show and the month of October.

GRAB LIFE at TEDxBend 2015 event with BOUNCE

I was so excited to work with BOUNCE USA to create an interactive mixed-media art piece for the TEDxBend 2015 conference this April. I built a custom 5 ft x 5 ft canvas that I painted with their "GRAB LIFE" tag line. I'm a huge fan of their all natural energy balls and shakes, I also adore the husband and wife team that cofounded the company, Mr. and Mrs. Bounce, Andy and Paula.

During the conference we asked attendees how they "Grab Life." As they wrote their answers and thoughts on strips of my hand painted paper, I applied them to the painting with Mod Podge. The end result was a beautiful, colorful, and authentic piece of artwork that we hung up at the BOUNCE headquarters here in downtown Bend.

"New Nature" City Walls at City Hall Group Exhibit

I'm so excited to be participating in a group show at City Hall in downtown Bend with my Women's Artist Group of Bend. The show is called "New Nature" and will be on display February 2015 - May 2015. It is part of the City Walls at City Hall initiative. This is a great show with a variety of work from a group of really great local, women artists here in Bend. All of the pieces are connected by their common theme of "Nature" Stop by and visit if you're in town! I sold one of my pieces, "Happy Little Leaves #7" to a collector here in town. It will be on display until the show comes down, then it will be off to it's new home. My other piece, a large diptych called "Put a Bird on It" is still available for sale. TREESCAPES Solo Exhibit at LUMIN Studio in Tumalo, October 2014

I was so honored to have the opportunity to share my work with the Central Oregon community with my debut show at LUMIN Studios on Tumalo this past October. It was a family affair with help from my dear husband, parents, and in-laws with things like child care and help with meals as I painted 30 paintings in 30 days in the month of September and prepared my work to show at the gallery. I had a successful opening afternoon and sold 6 paintings. It was overwhelming to be surrounded by friends, neighbors, fellow parents from school, local artists, and even a friend from college at my show's opening reception. I'm so grateful to the wonderfully talented, Carolyn Stokes, of Photography In Bend for capturing the light in the gallery and showcasing my work and the reception. I'll even forgive you for the photos that include my double chin!

New Series: Happy Little Trees

If you follow me on Instagram, you'll notice that my feed has been filling up with colorful tree paintings lately. I've been working on a new series in my studio for the past few weeks. I'm calling it my "Happy Little Trees" series. They're fun to make and I'm enjoying playing with colors, layers, and textures. A bit more whimsical than some of my more serious work but tons of fun to make and they are being received well by friends and family. I have experienced a lot of grief, change, and growth in the past two years after losing my best friend, Lisa, to lung cancer, losing my grandmother, and another close friend, Leslie, to cancer. Watching two more friends get diagnosed with cancer and start their own journey of healing as we learned we would be relocating for my husband's new job. Last fall, I moved across the United States from Virginia to Oregon to start a new life and new career path with my husband and our two daughters. I've spent a lot of time reflecting on the events of the past two years and have come out on the other end stronger, more resilient, and ready to make art again. I've quit craft blogging - it was fun for the 6 years I did it,  but not it's not a part of who I am anymore. My calling has always been to make my own art and be true to myself as an artist. 

My Happy Little Trees series is meant to be whimsical and colorful. I'm exploring color, texture, and line. I'm focusing on the interplay of "positive" and  "negative" space as I reflect on my own positive and negative growth experiences from the past few years. I'm using these trees as a form of art therapy to explore living more simply while celebrating nature, color, texture, and line. I want the viewer to feel happy and playful. I want them to be in the moment and feel joy. Life is short and meant to be celebrated.

I'm busy working in my studio to get ready for my upcoming solo show at Lumin Studios gallery in Tumalo, OR on October 11, 2014 from 1pm-4pm. There will be lots of paintings available for sale as well as some cards and prints. 

Painting Treescapes

My fourth class in the M.I.S. program was painting with John Figura. It was in this course I finally began to develop a focused body of work. I grew up in a neighborhood calledBellevue Forest, a community know for its surrounding oak, tulip poplar, sugar gum maple, cherry, and beech trees. My home and studio are also surrounded by woods and open fields. These pastoral and arboreal environments have had a tremendous impact on my work. 

I focus on trees in my painting and consider my subject matter to be treescapes as opposed to landscapes in the traditional sense. I regard them as hybrids: a process using tree sketches and photos combined with brightly colored backgrounds created by layering paint and scraping it with those fake plastic credit cards that come in the mail. These cards are wonderful tools not only for scraping paint but also serve as an ironic reminder of our consumer-driven society and how quickly we replace nature with man-made materials. 

My treescapes have three visual components that connect them: calling attention to detail by showing natural subject matter in its still state, flattening the image into a silhouette, and introducing fluid lines. I started my series of treescapes working on 30"x40" canvases and was encouraged by Figura to work bigger. By combining two 30"x40" canvases I created a diptych which led to building my own large-scale canvases which were much more satisfying on which to work. 
 

"Spiritual Sojourn" MaryLea Harris, Acrylic on Canvas, 48" x 72"

As a former printmaker, I admire and am influenced by Japanese Ukyo-e (woodblock) prints for their large flat areas of color and their use of bold outlines. These prints were most prolific during the early 1600s through the late 1800s and capture nature in its still state while emphasizing beauty. I flattened my trees into simplified silhouettes and used contrasting color fields to achieve this look in my own paintings. My favorite season is winter when the bare branches are silhouetted against the sky and layered with snow and ice. This influence is most obvious in the painting Spiritual Sojourn. It has the Asian aesthetic of "less is more" and was a very spiritual painting for me to create. 

Eventually, I asked myself how I could push the envelope further and thought of how Jackson Pollock (1912-1956) and Jasper John (b.1930) used unorthodox painting devices. I created my painting Timberline by pouring and throwing paint on a black gessoed-canvas, and by using a tree branch as my paintbrush to create the illusion of woods.

Mixed Media Emulsion Transfers

After experimenting in my first computer transfer class followed by a painting class, I became interested in combining the two mediums. I discovered that the layered imagery of contemporary artist Lynne Perrella's assemblages and collages and have a great deal in common with my monoprints from my undergraduate work. Her Jasper Johns-like pieces inspired me to merge my painting and computer transfers in any way that I could imagine. 

During an independent study with Bob Worthy I created a few canvases combining painting and transfers. The most successful one is The Journey Home because it fully incorporates my interests in layering both content and media. This textured canvas combines tea-dyed handmade paper with computer emulsion transfers. This led to a new series based upon this piece.
